20 Years Later It’s Still a Key to Success!

Happy 20-year anniversary! Dominion Eye Care in Virginia Beach, VA was one of the very first locations to purchase the Q-2100 Digital Lens System at its launch in 1999. Doctor Builds Customer Service Centered Practice with In-Office Lens Production

Over the past 14 months, I have made dramatic changes to my private practice that have paid great dividends. Before I talk about those changes, it is important to see where I was before I started.

I had been in private practice for 28 years. While the practice was going fine, we were not growing or slipping—we were stagnant. Our dispensary sales were flat, and our private pay sales were abysmal. It was extremely rare to sell a second pair of glasses under any circumstances.

Our labs provided acceptable service, but we were waiting a week to 10 days to receive our jobs. Many patients were not happy about this. Like everyone, my practice was under attack from online opticals and same-day opticals that could give as good or better service for a lower price.

Rethinking our approach
But then a series of events happened that caused me to rethink the whole basis of my practice.

It started when I learned that LensCrafters, one of the oldest one-hour labs, was getting rid of its in-store labs and moving away from one-hour service. I also heard that Walmart was not doing a lot of same-day service any more.

In fact, it seemed that almost every optical, private or not, was going to centralize lab work in order to save money at the expense of patient convenience.

Because many local labs were moving away from same-day service and into slower service, this gave me an idea where I could differentiate my practice. I was going to do completely the opposite of all of these companies.

I was going to change my practice top to bottom to deliver same-day optical service, and in general, improve all aspects of the customer service we were delivering both professional and retail. <end article>

Better service, happier patients
The result of the changes my practice implemented was that patients were blown away.

Not only were they getting better materials than they had had before, they could not believe the speed of delivery. Getting a product while they waited closed the sale many times.

As an example, we had an employee from Amazon go bonkers when we made his glasses in 10 minutes, then he referred his mother. She came in the same day after canceling her appointment at an optical that used to offer same-day service. This started a chain reaction of referrals and new patients coming into the practice.

We added our same-day service pledge to our website, which we updated with online appointment scheduling and optimized for mobile viewing.

Streamlining our optical, adding online appointments, and providing same-day service freed up staff time. We were able to increase the number of appointments we booked every day by 25 percent, which further improved our bottom line.<click to read complete article>

Eye Center Boutique Opens 11th Location!

Eye Center Boutique of Puerto Rico opened their eleventh location with a Q-2100 Digital Lens System and nanoCLEAR AR unit this April. “With ten very successful shops across the island, adding an ECB location at the busiest mall on the island was a goal.” The newest location, positioned in the tourist center of San Juan, continues to capitalize on their unique optical concept of selling high end handbags and accessories with prescription eyewear. A better way to cater to fashion conscious consumers with discerning taste.

Digital Lens Technology Improves Service Level for Island Location

Belleville Optical located on the island of Barbados, has long been a believer in the benefits of in office lens production. In business since 1994, Belleville Optical added the Q-2100 Digital Lens System to her practice in 1999. With limited lens procurement options available on the island, Belleville wanted an in-office system that was user friendly and easy to integrate.  “I added the Q-2100 technology to improve turn around time for delivering spectacles to our patients” shared the location. “It has drastically improved our delivery time thereby improving our cash flow,” the location added.

Digital Lens Technology Improves Service Levels

Lynn Bohlender, Certified Lab Technician for Northwest Optometry in Englewood, OH has successfully been operating the Q-2100 Digital Lens System with nanoCLEAR AR for nearly fifteen years. As shared on the practice website, “Lynn is the behind the scene detailed technician who produces our accurate in-house ophthalmic lenses the doctors prescribe for the patient’s prescription.”

As one of the first optometry practices to add the in-office nanoCLEAR AR unit to their business, Lynn was pleased with its purchase. “I like how easy it is to put on the AR coating or hardcoat with nanoCLEAR AR unit,” shared Lynn. When we first added the technology to Dr. Studebaker’s practice we could only process scratch coating and applied it by hand. I appreciate the additional capabilities of the newest equipment,” he added.

According to the practice, “our in-office optical laboratory has the ability to produce many of our own ophthalmic lenses, including even more complex, progressive addition lenses, photochromic and even anti-reflective lenses. Emergency service for broken or lost lenses can usually be provided the same day if necessary.” Lynn likes the fact that that this technology gives him the capability of producing a lens for a patient in the shortest amount of time.

Arlington Eye Physicians, a Team of Ophthalmologists, Believes In Delivering a Premium Product at a Lower Price than Competitors

Steven Bernstein at Arlington Eye Physicians in the Chicago area believes that the senior population he serves belongs in progressives rather than lined bifocals–more often than not.  “The Optical Dynamics 2100 and its AR unit allow me to make patients a premium product in the progressives category and eliminate the lines that interrupt vision.  A progressive is nothing more than a trifocal without lines.”  He averages about 7 or so pairs a day in-house with the tabletop lens production system, which generates about $500,000 a year.  Optical Dynamics offers the only technology that can cut your lab related lens and AR expense by up to 70% immediately.Inflatable water slide

And, he adds, “Photochromics are another recommended item for everybody that wears glasses.”  His shop has added the ultraSUN sunglass photo and sunSmart brown to its lineup of product.   “I love the new ultraSUN!  They go 3x to 5x darker than other photochromics and any form of anti-glare enhances vision.  It gives us another avenue of something new to offer and this marketplace is so competitive, we’ve got to stay ahead.”  The response?  “People either love ‘em or leave ‘ em, I ask every single patient to try the photochromics.”  The downside, as with all photochromics, remains that behind the wheel they do not get as dark, as if you were outside, since most car windows are tinted, but the new ultraSUN does have moderate activation behind a windshield.

Bernstein says he solved the pricing differential by keeping photochromics and progressives at the same fee structure.  “We offer the patient the better product at the same pricing as a progressive, and this pushes people to try it—you bet.  I’ve thought about charging extra, but the same price gives the option to the patient, and our practice would like our patients to be in the best product for them.”  He has determined that there is still margin, a nice markup, even with this approach.

At least once or twice a day, a patient comes in that has had a real emergency, and needs a new pair of eyeglasses now, he says.  “This is where the Optical Dynamics system really holds value—we’ve got to get these patients into a new pair of glasses in the same day.  I designed my lab myself and it’s like a gourmet kitchen.  One whole wall is the Optical Dynamics product line.”  The entire process allows Optical Dynamics in-house lens production setups to make a complete pair of lenses in as little as 25 minutes. Opthalmic Technicians Enthusiastic about nanoCLEAR AR

The team from Advanced EyeCare are avid users of the Q-2100 echnology. With two locations the doctor purchased the Q-2100 Digital Lens System and nanoCLEAR AR unit for his business in 2005.

The primary operator of the equipment proudly wears the lenses she made with the system. She has been running the system for a few years and in her words, “it’s the bomb!” When asked about the nanoCLEAR AR, the team shared their success rate with the product. “We have used some of the biggest AR names on the market and this is just as good if not better than the competition.”
